Windowsill of Joy – 23 April

An Irish window. Didn’t think we had much to portray Ireland but thought of Dublin bay roses and clover. Only one four leaved in our garden…The turquoise apron reminds me of Mrs browns kitchen and the bright tea-towel has obviously been saved for this.

The table cloth to stand in for all fabrics. The story goes that apparently my Irish grandfather was so poor he walked from Ireland before ending up chief buyer at Dickens and Jones when it was the top store for evening gown fabrics. And as he walked with a club foot that was pretty good going.

The outfit is from Irish NZ dancing. Brought some memories back of many hours at competitions with my daughter. Favourite moment when she exited stage left whilst still dancing and when a costume failed ( the correct naval knot on the sailor suit for the hornpipe, slid down her leg under trousers and ended up on the floor) and the entire audience swivelled to ask “which person dressed her…” Funny now after a few years….

Do hope the proverb proves true for you. Did want to put a box of Butlers Irish chocolates in the photo but mysteriously no longer visible…

  1. I am glad. Have only visited Ireland once and then Belfast when working so was a little concerned how window would be. I remember the botanic gardens and the glass houses which were stunning. It wasnt until I looked at the Irish dance costume hanging there that I realised I am as much of Irish extraction as Scottish.
